Three Springs 330

Three Springs 330

Round 6 of the 2016 CAMS PGS Industries Western Australian Off-Road Racing Championship

Hosted by Western Desert Racers, the Three Springs 330 is made up of a tough 55km track, heading south along the scenic western shores of the Yarra-Yarra Lakes, before weaving its way north through undulating farmland. The event is run in three sections of two laps each, giving 330 kilometres of total competitive distance. The track surface is quite varied including sections of farm track, gravel road, bare caprock and hard-packed sand with some small clay patches.

Three Springs is approximately 310 kilometres north of Perth and a 170km drive south-east of Geraldton, making it convenient for off-roaders living in the Midwest and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia.

Gascoyne Dash

–UPDATE– The 2016 Gas Dash has unfortunately been cancelled due to low confirmed entries. More information is available on the Gascoyne Dash website. Keep an eye on the website or follow GORRC on Facebook for information about the event in 2017.

Hosted by the Gascoyne Off Road Racing Association, the Gascoyne Dash is a challenge across some of the harshest and most remote country in Australia. Situated between the seaside town of Carnarvon and Gascoyne Junction – the desert by the sea, the Dash is a motorsport event that pits car against car and bike against bike and then the quickest of each against each other to determine who can be crowned the King of the River.

Comparison has been made between the Dash and the Finke Desert Race. Both races are a test of machine and competitor, held in the unique Australian outback. The Dash is a point-to-point race over a hugely varied landscape, a cross country course extensively consisting of natural desert and outback terrain. In excess of 500 kilometres over two days, the Dash is long and tough; it is an ultimate challenge.

414 Barry Cochrane 2016 Badgy 250

Badgingarra 250

Round 5 of the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries Western Australian Off-Road Racing Championship

The 2016 Cochrane’s Transport Badgingarra 250 was held on the Birrawong property, approx. 230km from Perth (roughly 30km north of Badgingarra on the Brand Highway) on 20-21 August 2016.

The brand new track was a mix of farm tracks, paddock runs, with some rocky areas and a few sandy areas. The perfect racing conditions were a huge change from our usual August event the Mogumber 240 (affectionately known as “Muddy Mogumber”), which is made up of very rough rocky sections and several creek crossings and mud holes.

Competitors raced seven laps of the 36 kilometre track, with recon, prologue and two laps on Saturday. Sunday’s racing saw one section of three laps followed by a section of two laps. Spectator viewing was impressive with excellent views of the start/finish line.

Congratulations to Brad Cooper and Aaron Smithson (968), Brett Smith and Corey Smith (161), and Grant Payne and  Michael Gullotto (22) for taking out first, second and third outright. Favourites Troy Schoen, Deb Schoen and Chris Harper (19) clocked fastest prologue time but unfortunately DNF’d on the first lap of the second section. Event sponsor Barry Cochrane and Ian Murray (414) finished a very respectable fifth outright and first in class, in their first race back after a couple of seasons off.

13 vehicles finished the event from the list of 25 starters. Read the full list of results on the myraceresult website.

WAORRA would like to thank our event sponsors:

Kalgoorlie 400

Round 4 of the 2016 CAMS PGS Industries Western Australian Off-Road Racing Championship

Hosted by the Western Desert Racers the Kalgoorlie 400 took place over the weekend of 9-10 July 2016. The longest race in the WAORC, this one was a true test of stamina and endurance. Add to that dry and dusty conditions and it’s no wonder not many cars finish this event. Kalgoorlie locals were given a show again this year with race cars doing a lap through town before racing began.

Bencubbin 360

Round 3 of the 2016 CAMS PGS Industries Western Australian Off-Road Racing Championship

One of the fastest tracks in Western Australia, the Marsue Transport Bencubbin 360 was held over the WA Day long weekend (4-6 June 2016). Starting from the sports oval in the town of Bencubbin, it was a tough, gruelling, long course off-road racing event that covered land across three farming properties. A huge field of 34 cars started the racing on the Saturday, and around 30 cars completed the race on Sunday.

Competitors raced long 75 kilometre laps, consisting of some tight twisty sections among the sandalwood trees, and some high-speed paddock sections. The fast sections were interspersed with several tighter sections to keep the drivers honest, but it was still a very fast track.

Congratulations to Scott Schiller and Reece Burgess (971) for taking out first place. WAORRA members dominated the podium with Brett Smith and Corey Smith (161) in second, and Troy Schoen and Chris Harper (19) in third. In addition to trophies for outright and class event winners, cash prizes were taken out by Darren Agrella and Ryan Barton in car #39 for finishing fastest in the top ten shoot out, and each class winner of the event. Read the full list of results on the myraceresult website.

Thanks again to the Bencubbin branch of the Silver Chain for putting on a special Saturday night dinner for competitors and spectators. With catering available all weekend, a licensed bar, hot showers, clean toilets, a green sporting oval and a playground, this was a great event for sponsors, spectators and families, and one not to be missed in 2017 – hope to see you there!

WAORRA would like to thank major event sponsors for the fourth year running – Marsue Transport.

2016 Duke of York Hotel Narrogin Chase 2nd Outright 22 Grant Payne

Narrogin Chase

The Duke of York Hotel Narrogin Chase is done and dusted. And boy was it dusty!

Held at the Patmore property on Springhill Road in Cuballing on 23 and 24 April 2016, racing was conducted over both Saturday and Sunday with competitors split into two heats to complete 10 laps of the approximately 15 kilometre track. The race featured two at a time starts for nine day  laps, plus a hot lap after the sun went down on Saturday.

Dust was thick at the only short course event in Western Australia in 2016, but the track offered plenty of opportunities to pass and provided action-packed racing. Based around a hill that commands the best views of any off-road course in Australia, and being only 190 kilometres south east of Perth, this was an ultimate spectator event and drew a crowd of spectators and families.

Cars lined up for scrutineering and a street display at Elders Narrogin on Saturday morning and put on a show for the local community. The Narrogin Speedway Club provided catering all weekend and kids were treated to a movie and lolly bag at the track on Saturday night.

It was a great event once again and we’d like to say a massive thanks to our event sponsors:

Carnarvon 360

Round 2 of the 2016 CAMS PGS Industries Western Australian Off-Road Racing Championship

A relatively new event on the WAORC calendar, the 2016 Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering, Carnarvon 360 took place over the Easter long weekend (25-27 March 2016). The course consisted of mainly hard surfaced station tracks, fence lines and roads. It was a challenging event, and although it was quite a long track (approx 45 kilometre laps), spectators were rewarded with some vehicles getting air over jumps.

Congratulations Brad Cooper and Aaron Smithson (968) for taking out provisional first outright, and Brett and Deanna Smith (161) for finishing a very close six seconds behind. You can read all the results on the My Race Result website.

The Gascoyne Off Road Racing Association would like to thank their major sponsors, the Carnarvon Motel and Pinjarra Engineering.

Children from various charities and their families were treated to a sausage sizzle and a ride in a race car. Drivers from each of the Western Australian off-road racing clubs were invited to attend, and with 16 cars and 85 families participating, we were at full capacity.
